Y. Stern: Creating The Difference.
Yaïr Stern (pronounced YAH-EER) was born on the beautiful green mount of Carmel, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. His being suggests jewelry: a tall and firm-minded person, yet very gentle and amiable man; just like jewelry: made of sturdy material yet fine and delicate. His name means ‘shining star’; one would imagine that becoming a jeweler would be natural for one baring such a name, but Yaïr had other plans. He became a mathematician and studied for a degree in mathematics in The Technion the prestigious technical school, overlooking the Haifa Bay. Between one Q.E.D. and another he made beautiful yet simple jewelry with basic tools. He sold his jewelry to earn a living. At the end of his studies he had a large collection and decided to sell it all so he can continue with a second degree. But his customers returned for more and Yaïr had no choice and began teaching himself the complex, difficult and fascinating craft of a jeweler. His first love was silver; it was less conservative but the color, shade, shine, feel of the metal and the lack of pretentiousness appealed to him. He returns to his first love often, but in those 20 years - he has designed with all precious metals and gemstones.
Yaïr Stern owns an acclaimed gallery in Israel and sells to galleries & museum shops across the US, Canada, Australia and Israel. He creates your favorite jewelry in his studio in the Toronto area, Canada.
I begin by observing my raw materials which is not only precious metals and gemstones but mainly - people. My jewelry is designed to enhance the beauty of the wearer and not to “take them over”.
As a designer who grew through his customers, I always see you, the customer, as my first priority.
The challenge is to attune to YOUR soft organic complex personality with a seemingly cold rigid material. With hard earned skill, modern and ancient techniques and imagination - I hope to accomplish the illusion that gold and silver are as flowing and as flexible as humans are.
After coming up with an idea, which is (hopefully) both original and beautifully simple, I turn to my craft. Jewelry is fine and gentle, but the process is long, almost arduous. Since I love this craft and due to my commitment to having full control of the process (and thus the quality), I am proud to be one of the few jewelers who hand craft all stages in their own studios, beginning with fine silver and 24K gold and ending with your unique jewel.
My goal is designing lasting, affordable jewelry without compromising on design nor originality.
I do my best in Creating the Difference with a wide variety of collections, designs, styles and prices, suitable for different ages and occasions. Having both a scientific and artistic mind - I always keep up with new approaches, techniques and materials. I am proud to lead the way with new inventions such as Argentium™ Silver (a new breakthrough in the silver world - highly tarnish resistant silver) and rediscoveries such as the 17th century Japanese technique Mokume-Gane. In the future I plan on using traditional silversmith technique to create a more traditional line of judaica, but still keep my new anodized aluminum Modern Judaica Collection; colorful, young and environmentally-friendly.
In today’s world of custom mass production jewelry made of toxic materials, I believe that designed jewelry made of healthy precious metals is not a is luxury. Being the sole man behind the whole process, I turn my belief into a fact, and hope to help in Creating the Difference.
I hope you enjoy browsing my online shop. Please feel free to contact me, I continue to learn from my customers and welcome your suggestions.
